Banana money is an informal term given to a type of currency issued by Imperial Japan during the Japanese occupation of Singapore, Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak and Brunei, and was named as such because of the motifs of banana trees on 10 dollar banknotes. It was in widespread use within the occupied territories where the previous currency became a scarcity. The currency were referred to as "dollars" and "cents" like its predecessors, the Straits dollar and Malayan dollar.

I start to collecting bank notes (paper money) today. I am interesting at the drawing in it.

Above is the paper money of 10 Gulden in year 1937 by Javasche Bank (now Bank Indonesia) and circulated in Hindia Belanda. The drawing is about a couple of "Wayang Wong or Wayang Orang" from the Central Java region, Indonesia. The serial number is NJ 09787 and the location and date is "Batavia 28 September 1937". This bank note signed by President Dr. G. G. van Butiingha Wichers and Secretaris J.C. van Waveren.

This book is one of my collection and written in Dutch language. I like it because there are maps of old Batavia city, Singapore, and several navigation maps on the sea from Amsterdam to Tg. Priok.

Coins are also graded. A coin's grading depends on its condition and the price of the coin will rely heavily on it. It is important for a coin collector to know how to grade a coin.

Uncirculated coins are those coins that are not showing any wear and tear or to use a famous term, in mint condition. A mint state (MS) grading depends on a coin's luster, contact marks, hair lines and overall appeal. A coin can have a grade ranging from MS-60 (dull luster) to a flawless MS-70. Although MS-70 is considered unobtainable, a grade of MS-65 and higher will make a coin's price shoot up.

Circulated coins are more forgiving, it does not take into consideration the amount of stracthes and dirt a coin has gathered along the years. Grades for circulated coins will vary. AU (about uncirculated), EF (extremely fine), VF (very fine), F (fine), VG (very good), G (good), AG (about good), F-2 (fair) and P (poor) are used as indication of how much a coin is worth.

The Government Museum, Chennai has a rich collection of the ancient, mediaeval and modern Indian coins, gold, silver, copper, lead, potin and billion. Besides these there is a representative collection of foreign coinage.

One of their collection is Puranas or Punch-Marked Coins. Puranas are the earliest money coined in India . They were in circulation during the centuries long before the beginning of the Christian era. Sanskrit writers such as Manu and Panini, and the Buddhist Jataka stories have made mention of these coins.

Neither Columbus nor the Vikings were the first non-natives to set foot on the Americas if Mark McMenamin is correct. Working with computer-enhanced images of gold coins minted in the Punic/Phoenician city in North Africa of Carthage between 350 and 320 BC, McMenamin has interpreted a series of designs appearing on these coins, the meaning of which has long puzzled scholars. McMenamin believes the designs represent a map of the ancient world, including the area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and the land mass representing the Americas.

The People of Indonesia were already familiar with coinage in the pre-Islamic era. The spread of Islam coincided with a major expansion in trade. Newly Islamised ports such as Pasai, Melaka, and Banten soon began to mint low-value coinage suitable for everyday use. These new coins were sometimes modelled after Muslim types from India and southwest Asia, sometimes after Chinese models. These coins were made of gold and silver, but more commonly of bronze, lead, or tin. The spread of these coins facilitated the evolution of new social institutions.

Early Sumatran Coins

Coins may have been first minted in Sumatra at some time in the 11th century. Sandalwood flower coins much like those of Java, and made of gold, electrum, and silver alloy, have been found at several 11th century sites in Sumatra including Barus, Bengkulu, and Muara Jambi, and also in South Thailand. These examples were very well made in comparison with silver alloy examples found in Java. Silver coins are rare in Sumatra; most are made of gold. No ancient coins have yet been reported as having been found at Palembang, despite abundant evidence that this was the site of an important port for centuries. This suggests that coinage may have had a limited role in the early Sriwijayan economy. International trade was probably conducted either through the mechanism known as tribulary trade, as in the case of China, or in another form known as administered trade. In this system, equivalencies were established between commodities through diplomatic negotiations rather than by bargaining.

Early Indonesian Coins

Found an interesting article from Indonesian Heritage book:

"Gold coins of 9th and early 10th century Java are stamped with the character ta in nagari script on the obverse, an abbreviation of tahil, probably signifying that the coins were legal tender for tax payments. The same character remained on coins until the Kadiri period in the 12th century.

Silver coins in central Java are quite different from the gold coins from the same period: in shape, renge of denominations, and manner of treatment. The gold coins were made in the shape of cubes, carefully crafted and very uniform in size and gold content. The silver coins are round and are called 'sandalwood flower' coins, after the four-petallled flower motif found on the reverse. They lasted from the early 9th to the 14th century. The same flower appears on one side of older silver ingots from central Java; the other side is stamped with a flowing vase design, which is never found on coins. The obverse of the sandalwood flower coins bears the nagiri script character ma, (abb, masa). This character degenerated quickly, perhaps because it is different from the kawi letter ma. The shape of the coin, its weight, and possibly its siver content all changed rapidly in about a century. The one masa coin shifted in the early 10th century from thick and flat to cup-shaped, and thin (about two milimeters). These coins presumably served as small change and were probably made by smoths in the markets for use in market transactions."

At least 1.749 old coins founded by Manirin (50), a red onion farmer in Balonggebang Village, Gondang, Nganjuk Regency, East Java. These coins estimated as Chinese remains. The size of them is bigger than the 500 rupiahs coin. In the center of it, there is a square hole and 4 chinese characters. Each coin has different characters.

I don't know that the Dutch East Indies Tenth Gulden coin has an unique story untill I read this: "These coins were minted in the USA for the Netherlands during WW2, when the royal mint at Utrecht was not available. They were intended for use in the unnocupied portions of the Indies.."

It has just 15 mm in diameter and made of .7200 silver. Very small coin. These coins are uncirculated and issued in year 1941.

Understanding the History of a Nation through Coin

The money is not just an exchange tool, but as a symbol of civilization too (politics, culture, and era). Therefore, money has multifunction. If we read the development of a currency, we can tell a story about the condition of a nation and all of the civilization journey history.

The journey of Indonesia history could be seen on the currency too. The Kindom of Djenggala (856-1158 M) is the first kindom which use currency (9th - 12th century). In 7th century, it's known that at the first time the currency made from silver in semi circular (half-circle) form. There is the carved of vase and billowing smoke on its face. On the back, the carved of Padma flower at the center of a frame.

Except to half-circle form, there are coins in the rectangular and button form which carved with ancient Javanese character.

In the Djenggala era at Kediri which known as the oldest kingdom on Java Island, the money was called by name "Krishnala". The money was made of silver and bronze. In the Majapahit era, the money was known by name "Gobog", looks like the Chinese gobog. Form in thin-circle and there was a rectangle hole at its center. In general, the Gobog money has carved of animal, puppet, and the relief which symbolize a people tale on that time.

There is more in the Kingdom of Banten, the currency which has the form as like as the Majapahit's Gobog money. In the Kingdom of Sumenep, the money called by name "Real Batu". That money supposed come from the Kingdom of Spanish's currency, but modificated by put a stamp of Arabian character "Soemenep", "Number" or "Rose flower".

At the Kingdom of Gowa, South Sulawesi, the Dinar money which made of gold was known in the Sultan Hasanuddin era (17th century). It's look like the Derham Aceh. In Banjarmasin, known as "Doewit" and circulating around year 1812, made of tin.

The currency which mold by the Kingdom of Buton, has difference to the other kingdom currencies, because it doesn't use metal, but fabric material which weaved by the king daughter. It's popular by name "Kampua" or Bida".

Numismatics Collection of the Museum Nasional

The Museum Nasional has more than 17,112 Numismatic and Heraldic objects - 500 of which are on public display. The Numismatic collection comprises Indonesian and foreign coins and valuable papers, whereas the Heraldic collection is made up of medals, emblems, stamps and amulets. These collections were started by Radermacher in 1778.

As recorded by ancient Javanese inscriptions, Indonesian currencies date back to the 8th century. These early coins were made out of gold and silver, and were known as masa, suwarna and dharana. They were utilised until the 15th century together with Chinese currency, although the latter continued to be used in Bali until the 1950s.

During the Majapahit age, coins called gobog were also in circulation and in subsequent centuries. Islamic kingdoms such as Aceh, Palembang, Jambi and Banten produceh their own currencies too. They were named after kings and were imprinted with the Islamic year (Hijrah) in Arab-Melayu letters.

Between the 16th and 20th centuries, each colony (Portuguese, Dutch, British and Japanese) had their own currency. As time passed, gold and silver coins gave away to paper notes.

The Museum Nasional collects foreign currencies, including Dutch, British, Portuguese, Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Japanese coinage. Among the most interesting collections are the knife money (tao chien or uang pisau), made in the 3rd century BC.
